This short work is a compelling introduction to the series. Protagonist Omar Bakhoum wants to reach Ysland in the north to learn its secrets. Captain Riuza Ngozi of the airship “Frost Finch” is reluctantly persuaded to take him on the expedition because he has an ancient Rus map showing the former coast of northern Europe, which has been covered by ice for thousands of years. Omar’s trip aboard the airship and interaction with the crew evoke Jules Verne, with promising glimpses of upcoming adventures.One of Omar’s most interesting aspects is his interaction with the spirits of all those whom he has vanquished, who are now inside his aetherium blade (including a gladiator, a Hindu physician, and a samurai, its most recent arrival). These parts are especially well written and oddly believable.
Although this introductory work is very short (hence four stars instead of five), it certainly makes you want to read more.

This is a long short story that introduces one main character and hopefully another supporting character for the series. It's a fun story in its own right and I hope the series is as good.
I liked what there was of this quiet a lot. This was a unique steam punk style world. The magic and ghost didn't seem out of place while the over all story was well done and the characters life like. I did enjoy the magic and how the sword worked the system felt both complex and unique.
However it feels like it got cut off way to early. I am not familiar with this series or author so it might be that this is the way the series is normally done. I was just surprised when I got to the end of this book because I expected that there would be more. Since it was on my kindle I was reading away and suddenly the book was over.
I will say it was great while it lasted though.
This certainly a promising start for what could be a great series, and since I have the second book I plan on finding out quite soon.
The world itself is rather cool and has a bit of a alternate reality feel to it, as well as some great steampunk aspects. But the coolest part of this is the whole inclusion of aether, sun-steel and ghosts. Those three things make this story wildly unique and I really loved the whole idea of a sword being able to trap souls. Omar is a curious character and I really wish that I knew what made him immortal, it's hinted at so I can only hope that there will be some mention of it later.
The writing is fluid and detailed and certainly wonderful to read.
This is a series I fully intend on continuing when I get the chance.
Set in a Steampunk style world, 'Wreck of Frost Finch' combines the known and the unknown in a fascinating way. In the series, Marrakesh is the largest and most powerful country in the world, possessing technology that has previously been unknown to the other civilizations of the world, such as steam powered flying ships that resemble dirigibles in our world, and steam powered locomotives. All through the book, you catch glimpses of people, places, and things that are familiar, and yet are subtly different. It was a fascinating read, and I recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy.
This story moves smoothly and hints and an interesting world. I wanted to wait to comment on this story until I had finished Book 1 of the series, however that still has not happened yet, as you will find out below.
This novella is compelling, smoothly written and brings up a lot of questions one hopes will be dealt with later in the series. This is a very good story, but I feel I must warn you about Book 1, as the promise of this story WILL make you want to read more.

Book 1 What I first thought of as "exotic names to create an exotic world" made the early part of this book difficult to follow. I despise that gambit. However, the exotic names are actually carefully researched to match with the origins of the characters and nations in the Aetherium world. Don't let the difficulty in reading the early sections stop you.
If you are willing to suffer a few spoilers, there is a glossary at the end of the book that explains them.
I love Steampunk! I was about one third into "The Kaiser Affair" by this author, and was so enjoying it that I stopped to see if the author had other books that might be similar. Of course this led me to checking him out a little more in depth. I discovered a perfect blend of fantasy, history, mystery, mythology and heroines I would love for my daughter to look up to. In this novel, "Wreck of the Frost Finch". I knew I was going to enjoy the story from page one when the world was seen through the eyes of Omar. The women, the gadgets and the ghosts. The ending reminded me of something Alfred Hitchcock would think of, and left me wanting more of course.
~It is a short story…I’m okay with that. I did not care for the main character. He left me kinda cold. Not someone I’d want on my team or in my crew (maybe he has some redeeming characteristics that will come out in the future).
~Did not care for the ending seemed that the story just stopped…there wasn’t truly an ending.
~In the books favor, I did not realize that it was a prequel when I read it. That would explain why it ended abruptly…it wasn’t really the ending (eight more books in the series).
~I can’t really complain about something, or fault the author, if I don’t give the series a fair try. However, I can’t give it five stars because it is a prequel…a teaser, if you will…and it did NOT entice me to continue on to the next book in the series.
